Can I also use e-invoicing outside Belgium?

As from 2026, structured electronic invoicing will be compulsory for Belgian enterprises. As from 2030, this obligation will also apply to invoicing between EU Member States. Further information on the practical impact of this decision will follow.

Peppol in an international context is currently mainly an opportunity to exchange electronic invoices in a safer way, which also enables automatic processing. A pdf-invoice exchanged via email is not intended for automatic processing and involves hidden costs in terms of security and processing, which must also be taken into account.

Peppol is possible if both parties voluntarily choose to use it. If you are connected to the Peppol network, you can also send invoices to companies outside Belgium that are connected to this network. Conversely, you can also receive invoices from foreign suppliers via this network if this opportunity is offered.

Registration on the Peppol network is considered as an agreement to receive structured electronic invoices (at least in Peppol-BIS format). After registration, you may then check which one of your clients (even international clients) are ready and willing to receive structured electronic invoices in a secured way.
